Scanning electron microscopy is an invaluable tool to get a good grasp on the organization of taste receptors that we see through the oculars of a stereomicroscope. It helps to know which type of hairs are present and where we can find them.

In the European corn borer, adults have interesting hairs on the tarsi. Females have twice as much as males.
